The Shirt Off My Back Tour Hits Torrington Oct. 14
Websites. Water. Wedding gowns. When it comes to levying taxes in Connecticut, nothing is spared.
With many residents frustrated and leaving the state they love because they can no longer afford to live here, The Yankee Institute for Public Policy launched a statewide tour last summer asking citizens, “Is Connecticut taxing the shirt off your back?”
The tour will make a stop in Torrington on Wednesday evening, Oct. 14 from 6:30 – 8:00. The event is free and open to the public. Those who pre-register to attend will receive a complimentary T-shirt to replace the one that’s been figuratively taxed off their back.
While the T-shirts tangibly illustrate that Connecticut’s taxes are making citizens’ lives more difficult every year, the main focus of the non-partisan gathering is to educate citizens from Torrington and surrounding areas on why their taxes are so high, and discuss steps they can take, individually and collectively, to solve the problem.
Pastor Will Marotti, founder of New Life Church in Meriden, will moderate a panel discussion that evening. In addition to his duties as a pastor, he is a husband, father, and coach, who also fills-in as a host on WTIC talk radio.
“Never ending tax increases, high energy costs, the loss of jobs and an embarrassingly unfunded state pension all tell us that ‘hoping for improvement’ is not a viable plan,” says Pastor Marotti, who adds, “Instead, citizens must demand leadership from their elected officials.”
Composed of business, community and political leaders, as well as policy experts from the Yankee Institute, the panel will present a clear picture of the current tax situation in Connecticut, discuss possible solutions to existing and anticipated future problems and field questions from the audience.
The panel will feature:
- JoAnn Ryan, President and CEO of Connecticut’s Northwest Chamber of Commerce
- Sen. Rob Kane (R-Watertown), ranking member of the appropriations committee
- Carol Platt Liebau, president of the Yankee Institute
The venue for the Shirt Off My Back Tour—Torrington stop—is the Knights of Columbus Hall, 152 Litchfield Street. If you have questions or would like to register by phone or email, contact Matthew Fox, 860.282.0722 or email@example.com.
The Yankee Institute for Public Policy is a Connecticut think tank that develops and advances policy solutions to promote smart, limited government; fairness for taxpayers; and an open road to opportunity for all the people of our state.
