Connecticut's 'Runaway Budget'

by D. Dowd Muska

Hartford, April 27, 2006 -- With politicians in Hartford bickering over the final details of Connecticut's 2006-07 spending plan, the Yankee Institute has released a brief analysis that puts the budget debate in a broader perspective.

"Connecticut's Spending Habit" is the latest in the Institute's "Fiscal Focus" series of publications, which are designed to explain complicated policy concepts in clear language and numbers.

One key fact documented in "Connecticut's Spending Habit" is that inflation-adjusted, per-capita state spending has grown fivefold since 1970. The State of Connecticut now spends almost $42 million a day.

"It's easy to get lost in the end-of-session budget squabbling in Hartford," said D. Dowd Muska, the Institute's fiscal-policy fellow. "But this document take a longer view, and reveals just how out of control state spending has been in recent decades."

"Since Big Government is closely linked to economic stagnation, it's imperative that Connecticut kick its addiction to an ever-larger public sector."

The Yankee Institute for Public Policy is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, research and education organization that finds new ideas for lower taxes and better government in Connecticut.

Muska is available for print, radio, and television interviews. Contact Mary Crean at (860) 521-6164 or mary@yankeeinstitute.org.

D. Dowd Muska is the Yankee Institute's Philip Gressel Fellow for Tax and Budget Policy.
